DESCRIPTION:Black Music Appreciation Month is an annual celebration of A
frican-American music in the United States. It was initiated as Black Musi
c Month by President Jimmy Carter\, who\, on June 7\, 1979\, decreed that
June would be the month of Black music. After the announcement by Carter\,
the bill finally passed in 2000 when activist Dyana Williams' 10 years of
effort persuaded Congress. Williams played an essential role in the creat
ion and solidification of Black Music Month\, along with Kenneth Gamble an
d Ed Wright.Black Music Month became African American Music Appreciation M
onth in 2009 by a proclamation from President Barack Obama. In his 2016 pr
oclamation\, Obama noted that African-American music and musicians have he
lped the country \"to dance\, to express our faith through song\, to march
against injustice\, and to defend our country's enduring promise of freed
om and opportunity for all.\" In 2023\, President Joe Biden returned it to
its original name of Black Music Month. However\, we at the Afrii Diaspor
a Dialogue consider that an act of disrespect to the first African America
n president of the United States and to the African diaspora\; \"African A
merican Music Appreciation Month\" is a more respectful name in respect to
the celebration L's origins\, which is African American music. How ever t
he \"Black Music Month\" is more involving of the African diaspora and a c
hance and reminder to celebrate and appreciate African diaspora music as a
whole\, which largely share similarities related to its origin in Africa.

DESCRIPTION:Black History Month is an annually observed commemorative mo
nth originating in the United States\, where it is also known as African-A
merican History Month. It began as a way of remembering important people a
nd events in the history of the African diaspora\, initially lasting a wee
k before becoming a month-long observation since 1970. It is celebrated in
February in the United States and Canada\, where it has received official
recognition from governments\, and more recently has also been celebrated
in Ireland and the United Kingdom where it is observed in October. The pre
cursor to Black History Month was created in 1926 in the United States\, w
hen historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro
Life and History (ASNLH) announced the second week of February to be \"Ne
gro History Week\". This week was chosen because it coincided with the bir
thday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and that of Frederick Douglass on
February 14\, both of which Black communities had celebrated since the lat
e 19th century.Black educators and Black United Students at Kent State Uni
versity first proposed Black History Month in February 1969. The first cel
ebration of Black History Month took place at Kent State a year later\, fr
om January 2 to February 28\, 1970.Six years later\, Black History Month w
as being celebrated all across the country in educational institutions\, c
enters of Black culture\, and community centers\, both great and small\, w
hen President Gerald Ford recognized Black History Month in 1976\, during
the celebration of the United States Bicentennial. He urged Americans to \
"seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of
Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history\".

DESCRIPTION:In the United Kingdom\, Black History Month was first celebr
ated in October 1987. The year of 1987\, recognized as the African Jubilee
\, was coincidentally the year of the 150th anniversary of Caribbean emanc
ipation\, the centenary of the birth of Marcus Garvey and the 25th anniver
sary of the Organization of African Unity\, an institution dedicated to ad
vancing the progress of African states. Black History Month in the UK was
organized through the leadership of Ghanaian analyst Akyaaba Addai-Sebo\,
who had served as a coordinator of special projects for the Greater London
Council (GLC) and created a collaboration to get it underway. The first B
lack History Month celebration in the UK was held in London on October 1\,
1987\, when Dr. Maulana Karenga from the US was invited to an event by th
e Greater London Council about Black people’s contributions to history.S
ome institutions have faced criticism for supporting Black History Month w
ith images of people from British Asian backgrounds\, using the term “bl
ack” to refer to political blackness encompassing all people of color.

oliday in the United States observed on the third Monday of January each y
ear. King was chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Righ

aw and civil society. The movement led to several groundbreaking legislati
ve reforms in the United States.Born in 1929\, Martin Luther King Jr.’s
actual birthday is January 15 (which in 1929 fell on a Tuesday). The earli
est Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21.The
campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his ass
assination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in
1983\, and it was first observed three years later on January 20\, 1986.
At first\, some states resisted observing the holiday as such\, giving it
alternative names or combining it with other holidays. Official observance
in each state’s law as well as federal law occurred in 2000.

DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day
and also known as Jubilee Day\, Emancipation Day\, Freedom Day\, and Black
Independence Day) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating
the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans.Celebrations date to 1866\
, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. They s
pread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 193
0s\, often centering on a food festival. Participants in the Great Migrati
on out of the South carried their celebrations to other parts of the count
ry. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s\, these celebrations wer
e eclipsed by the nonviolent determination to achieve civil rights but gre
w in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African American freedo
m and African American arts. Beginning with Texas by proclamation in 1938\
, and by legislation in 1979\, 49 U.S. states and the District of Columbia
have formally recognized the holiday in various ways. With its adoption i
n certain parts of Mexico\, the holiday became an international holiday. J
uneteenth is celebrated by the Mascogos\, descendants of Black Seminoles w
ho escaped from slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila\, Mexico.
